Nordiq Alberta Club Development Fund

The Club Development Fund is an initiative to further support clubs financially. Whether it is for programming, coaching, events, or trail and grooming development the Club Development Fund is meant to exist for clubs to apply for financial support to build the necessary infrastructure and programs to increase the practice of cross-country skiing in their area and their club membership numbers.

Applicants must be a club in good standing of Nordiq Alberta.

Applications should indicate the nature of the project and how the funding will be used. Preference will also be given to applications that utilize funding in one or multiple of the uses outlined below:

  • to benefit a large audience
  • to increase club membership
  • is a new initiative
  • works towards getting all Albertans on skis
  • is a long-term sustainable project

How can I increase my Club Membership?

There are endless ways for a club to increase your membership! We encourage all clubs to think outside the box & get creative with a variety of initiatives. Here are some ideas and resources to get you started:

  • Add posters about your club to trails! Nordiq Alberta offers custom club posters making the process simple & easy
  • Host a pop up event or try-it day for your club. Want support with this event? Fill out the Nordiq Alberta Outreach Form!
  • Host events or programs for specific groups such as newcomers, parents, women & girls, para-nordic athletes, family ski days, etc.
  • Distribute flyers with information about your club to places in your community, schools, summer sports teams, etc. You could also advertise your club with flags, tents, and posters. Clubs can access preferred pricing through Impact Canopy.
  • Connect with your local schools to teach a physical education block this winter & introduce them to cross country skiing

Ski Playground

Ski playgrounds are where aspiring young athletes can develop and learn common skills together. The following resources are intended to be used anywhere there is snow and a bit of space, adaptable to your local surroundings, needs and imagination.

Ski Playground Guidebook

How to Build a Ski Playground

Ski Playground Drill Appendix

As clubs, coaches, instructors, learning facilitators, etc., the key is to let the environment teach. Set up the challenges so that young skiers are challenged to explore and discover the possibilities. The information contained in the above documents is intended to help coaches cue in on key developmental benchmarks and to adapt the challenges and environment to bring these forward, not to have the skiers think or become self-conscious of “doing it right”. The environment will do the teaching. So step back, ensure that the space is safe, encourage exploration and watch the skiers progress!
